Connect Zilch to your AI
Connect your Zilch account to the AI assistant you already use, and you can ask about your products’ carbon footprints, compare products and add new ones, all from a chat.
What you need
- A Zilch account on the Team, Professional or Enterprise plan.
- An AI assistant that can connect to other tools. Choose yours in Step 2 to see what it needs.
Step 1: Copy your Zilch secret key
- Log in to Zilch.
- Go to Settings, then Profile, then API Access.
- Find Secret API Key and copy it. It starts with
zlch_sk_. If there isn’t one yet, click Generate secret key.
Keep this key private, like a password. Anyone who has it can see and change your Zilch products.
If you already have a secret key, copy it instead of making a new one. A new key replaces the old one, and anything still using the old key stops working.
Step 2: Add Zilch to your AI
Choose the AI you use. The steps below change to match.
You need a Claude account at claude.ai. Free Claude accounts can add one connector. Paid accounts can add more.
Add the connector
- Go to claude.ai and open Customize, then Connectors.
- Click + Add, then Add custom connector.
- For the name, type Zilch.
- For the URL, paste this, then click Continue.
https://api.tryzilch.com/mcp - When Claude asks how to sign in, choose No sign-in.
- Under Request headers, add one header:
- Name:
x-api-key - Value: your secret key from Step 1
- Name:
- Click Add.
Use Zilch in a chat
- Start a new chat in Claude.
- Click + at the bottom left, then Connectors, and switch on Zilch.
- Ask Claude a question about your products.
Once it’s added, Zilch is also in the Claude desktop and mobile apps. Claude asks for your permission before it adds or changes anything in your Zilch account.
ChatGPT can’t connect to Zilch yet
ChatGPT only connects to tools you sign in to. Zilch connects with a secret key at the moment, and ChatGPT has nowhere to put one. We’re working on a Zilch sign-in so ChatGPT can connect too.
Until then, you can use Zilch from Claude, Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code or Gemini CLI. To hear when ChatGPT works, email us at info@tryzilch.com.
Add the connector
Run this in your terminal:
claude mcp add --transport http --scope user zilch https://api.tryzilch.com/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_SECRET_KEY"Replace YOUR_SECRET_KEY with your key from Step 1, keeping Bearer and the space after it.
--scope user adds Zilch to all your projects. Leave it out to add Zilch to the current project only.
Use Zilch
- Start Claude Code and type
/mcp. Zilch should show as connected. - Ask a question about your products.
Add the connector
- Open
~/.cursor/mcp.jsonin your home folder. Create it if it doesn’t exist. - Paste this in:If the file already has anjson
{ "mcpServers": { "zilch": { "url": "https://api.tryzilch.com/mcp", "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_SECRET_KEY" } } } }"mcpServers"section, add the"zilch"entry inside it instead. - Replace
YOUR_SECRET_KEYwith your key from Step 1, keepingBearerand the space after it. Then save the file.
To add Zilch to one project only, use .cursor/mcp.json in that project instead. Don’t commit that file to git with your key in it.
Use Zilch
- Check that Zilch is switched on in Cursor’s MCP settings.
- Ask about your products in Cursor’s Agent chat.
Add the connector
- In your project, create a file called
.vscode/mcp.jsonand paste this in:You don’t need to edit it. VS Code asks for your key and stores it securely, so the key isn’t saved in the file.json{ "servers": { "zilch": { "type": "http", "url": "https://api.tryzilch.com/mcp", "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${input:zilch-key}" } } }, "inputs": [ { "type": "promptString", "id": "zilch-key", "description": "Zilch secret API key", "password": true } ] } - Save the file, then click Start just above
"zilch". - Paste your secret key from Step 1 when VS Code asks for it.
To use Zilch in every project, open the Command Palette, run MCP: Open User Configuration and paste the same config there.
Use Zilch
- Open Copilot Chat and switch to Agent mode.
- Ask a question about your products.
Add the connector
- Open
~/.gemini/settings.jsonin your home folder. Create it if it doesn’t exist. - Paste this in:If the file already has other settings, add thejson
{ "mcpServers": { "zilch": { "httpUrl": "https://api.tryzilch.com/mcp", "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_SECRET_KEY" } } } }"mcpServers"section alongside them. If it already has an"mcpServers"section, add the"zilch"entry inside it. - Replace
YOUR_SECRET_KEYwith your key from Step 1, keepingBearerand the space after it. Then save the file.
Use Zilch
- Start Gemini CLI and type
/mcp. Zilch should show as connected. - Ask a question about your products.
Connection details
Zilch works with any AI assistant that can connect to a remote MCP server and send a header with each request. Use these details:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Server URL | https://api.tryzilch.com/mcp |
| Transport | Streamable HTTP |
| Header | Authorization: Bearer YOUR_SECRET_KEY, or x-api-key: YOUR_SECRET_KEY |
If your assistant can only connect by signing in, and has nowhere to add a header, it can’t connect to Zilch yet.

Things you can ask
- “What’s in my Zilch account?”
- “Which of my products have the lowest carbon footprint?”
- “Compare the carbon footprint of MUG-01 and MUG-02.”
- “Tell me everything about our bamboo travel mug.”
- “Add a new product: steel water bottle, 450 g, stainless steel, made in China, packed in a cardboard box.”
- “Estimate the carbon footprint of the products I just added.”
- “Email the carbon footprint report for 100 units of MUG-01 to jane@example.com.” This needs a paid plan, not a free trial.
Good to know
- Changes are real. Anything your AI adds or changes happens in your Zilch account.
- AI estimates are drafts. Review and finalise them in Zilch before you share them. Your AI gives you a link to each one.
- Your finalised footprints are safe. Your AI can’t change a finalised footprint, and it can’t delete products.
- Emails need your go-ahead. Zilch tells your AI to check the customer’s email address with you before it sends a report.
- There are daily limits, for example 100 AI footprint estimates a day.
- To disconnect, remove Zilch from your AI’s connector or MCP settings. To block access completely, generate a new secret key in Zilch. Anything else using the old key, such as Zapier, stops working too.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| I can’t see Request headers in Claude | Claude is still rolling this option out. Email us at info@tryzilch.com and we’ll help you connect. |
| My AI says my plan doesn’t include this | Connecting an AI needs the Team, Professional or Enterprise plan. You can upgrade in Zilch under Billing. |
| My AI says my key is invalid | Copy the key again from Zilch. Check it starts with zlch_sk_ and has no spaces before or after it. In a config file, check you replaced YOUR_SECRET_KEY and kept Bearer in front of the key. |
| My AI says it needs a secret key | You’ve used the widget key, which starts with zlch_live_. Use the Secret API Key instead. |
| My AI doesn’t use Zilch | Check that Zilch is switched on. In Claude, that’s +, then Connectors. It also helps to mention Zilch in your question. |
