Sphera's LCA software is another serious enterprise option, combining lifecycle software, datasets and automation. It is particularly relevant to organisations with expert LCA teams, complex industrial products and broader product-stewardship requirements.

It did not make this seven only because the list already includes an expert modelling platform and an enterprise decision platform. It should still be on the shortlist for a large industrial implementation.

Questions to ask in a software demonstration

Bring one real product, not a polished vendor example. Ask the provider to show:

  1. How the product unit and pack size are defined.

  3. How primary, secondary and estimated data are labelled.
  4. How emission factors are selected and updated.
  5. How variants and shared components are managed.
  6. How supplier evidence is requested and retained.
  7. How calculation versions change when source data change.
  8. How results are exported to the systems where customers need them.
  9. What the platform does not cover.
  10. What independent review or assurance options exist.

Also ask who is expected to operate the system. "Easy to use" can mean easy for an LCA consultant, a sustainability manager or a salesperson. Those are very different promises.

Avoid these buying mistakes

Choosing on database size alone

More emission factors do not guarantee a better result. Relevance, geography, recency, transparency and selection rules matter.

Confusing organisational and product carbon accounting

A corporate Scope 3 platform may estimate purchased-goods emissions without producing customer-ready product footprints. A PCF platform may calculate products without managing the corporate inventory.

Automating before defining the data model

If "one unit" means a roll in one system and a carton in another, automation spreads the error quickly.

Assuming software equals verification

Software can support a standard-aligned calculation. It does not automatically make every output independently verified, comparable or suitable for a public claim.

Running a perfect pilot that cannot scale

A beautifully modelled hero product proves very little about the remaining catalogue. Test import, matching, exceptions, approvals and updates before committing.

The bottom line
